Help Tiny Fight Feline ObesityFeline obesity can potentially cut in half the years of life of an affected cat, and the years that an obese cat lives can be plagued with a multitude of serious diseases and pain. Since feline obesity has been a recent topic here at Kitten Smitten, it only seems fitting that we feature the plight of an organization that is hoping to prolong the life of an obese kitty, Tiny – as he is affectionately known. The Fredericton SPCA Animal Shelter is working to ensure that Tiny, as well as a few other furry friends in need, live a long and healthy life. Here is Tiny’s story:Tiny came to the Fredericton SPCA Animal Shelter on December 30th 2011. He was taped up in a cardboard box with another much smaller cat, Rapunzel, and left in the shelter lobby. At first we thought the box was full of donations of computer paper, cat treats, etc. but then the box meowed. We were shocked to see what was inside; 2 cats Tiny and Rapunzel.During his initial health check Tiny weighed in at 30.2 lbs., the largest cat we have ever seen! A local veterinarian assessed his health, and recommended a low-cal high protein diet with the goal of a slow, steady and healthy weight loss. So we are putting Tiny on a diet and are hoping to inspire others to educate themselves on the dangers of pet obesity and how everyone can provide better nutrition and more exercise to their pets!Your donations to Tiny's Weight Loss Challenge will go to a special medical fund to help special needs animals like Tiny at the Fredericton SPCA. Tiny's special canned diet food is estimated to cost $4 - $5 a day; as well he will need regular vet check-ups and could require extensive testing. Tiny's weight loss partner is Pepper our shelter cat who weighs in at 19 lbs. and she will also require the special diet food. Currently we have 2 senior female dogs Rita and Kya who are in need of spay surgeries that because of their age are more extensive and expensive surgeries, they also require some mammary gland tumor removal and post-op care estimated to cost about $1,200 each. Your support will help provide these amazing animals the best medical care and a second chance at the good life! Our current goal is $4,900 to cover special diet food and veterinary care for both Tiny & our shelter cat Pepper and both Rita and Kya's special surgeries. You can donate a lump sum or donate per every pound Tiny loses (and don't forget about Pepper).
